October 28, 2005. Media Contest
The Armenian Public Health Alliance announced the results of the media
contest for the best journalistic work about tobacco control issues in
Armenia. The selections committee was comprised of professional journalists
and representatives of the Alliance and the Ministry of Health.

Certificates for attention to the anti-tobacco theme were awarded to “Hayastani
Hanrapetutyin” and “Azg” daily newspapers.
October 15, 2005. Public Action at Cascade
The Armenian Public Health Alliance and the Coalition for Tobacco Free
Armenia organized an open-air event at the center of Yerevan, near
the Cascade. A puppet show) advocating for nonsmoking lifestyles took
place with support from the Public Health Department of Bringham Young University
(Provo, Utah).
Games and sports competitions were organized for the young participants
of the events, mainly schoolchildren from Erebouni district of Yerevan. Children
took home the brochures on passive smoking donated by the UMCOR Armenia
and also funny prizes prepared by the Armenian Public Health Alliance with
support of Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation.

October 12, 2005. Letter to the President Kocharyan
The Coalition
for Tobacco Free Armenia organized a press conference to publicize the
letter to the President Kocharyan calling for the recognition
of October 12, the day of the FCTC ratification by Armenia, as a National
SmokeOut Day.
The preliminary results of the study conducted by the Center for Health
Services Research and Development of the American University of Armenia
were presented to journalists during the press conference.

The Armenian Public
Health Alliance organized a panel discussion “The
Current State of Armenian Tobacco Control Legislation and Future Developments:
a Year After”. The event was organized at the Business Center
of the American University of Armenia with support from the Open Society
Institute.

15-26, 2005. Summer School on Tobacco Control
The Open Society Institute
supported a training of the delegation from Armenia in the Summer School
on Tobacco Control, Warsaw, Poland.

May 31, 2005. Film Premiere
The premiere of the first Armenian documentary film on tobacco issues “Life
Without Tobacco” on the National TV Channel (H1).
Shoghakat TV Company produced the film in cooperation with the Armenian
Public Health Alliance expert team with financial support from the Open
Society Institute.

May 31, 2005. Public Action
Representatives of the Human Health Fund and students from Bringham Young
University organized a public event on Azatutyun Square. Students from
Bringham Young University performed a mask show.
May 31, 2005. Round Table Discussion
On the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day, the Partnernship for Open
Society organized a round-table discussion at Congress Hotel on “Contemporary
Issues in Tobacco Control Policy in Armenia.
The panelists were:

May 30, 2005. Public Discussion
Armenian Public Health Alliance organized a public discussion on tobacco
control issues with junior medical students at the Yerevan State Medical
University named after Heratsi.
Speakers were:

The film “Life
without tobacco ” was demonstrated and the speakers

April 4, 2005. Panel Discussion
Panel discussion on tobacco control issues with Yerevan high school students
was organized by the Youth for Achievements and Jinishian Memorial Fund
at the American University of Armenia. The film “Life Without Tobacco” was
demonstrated and discussed with high school students.
January 19, 2005. Panel Discussion
A Panel Discussion on “Tobacco Control Policy in Armenia and International
Experience” was held at the American University of Armenia with support
from the Open Society Institute.
The panelists were:
Ms. Rachel Kaprielian, Representative, House of Representatives (MA), the author
of Massachusetts anti-tobacco law
Ms. Hranush Hakobyan, Chair of the Standing committee on Science, Education,
