October 26, 2006. Round-Table on “Tobacco Control Policy: Efforts Toward Effective Implementation” in Gyumri, Shirak

In cooperation with the Shirak marz authorities and the “Center for regional development and social support ” NGO, the Armenian Public Health Alliance (ArmPHA) organized a public discussion on tobacco control policy in Gyumri.
The meeting was opened by Mr. Ashot Petrosyan, Deputy Governor of Shirak marz. Dr. Alexander Bazarchyan, Coordinator of the MOH Tobacco Control Program, made a presentation on the national tobacco control policy in Armenia. The results of ArmPHA Survey on Tobacco Control Policy in Armenia were briefly introduced to the audience by Dr. Narine Movsisyan (ArmPHA). Mr. Garegin Petrosyan (Center for regional development and social support) presented “Healthy Future, Healthy Children ” Program implemented in Gyumri with support from the Center for Public Dialog and Development (CPDD). In conclusion, Mr. Elinar Vardanyan (CPDD) introduced opportunities for tobacco control grants within the state budget.
Local authorities, school administrators and representatives of Gyum ri-based NGOs expressed their strong interest and support to the implementation of state tobacco control policy and emphasized the importance of the proper enforcement of the adopted measures.

October 20, 2006. Round-Table on “Tobacco Control in Armenia: Achievements and Future Issues”

The round-table was organized by “Verelk” NGO in the framework of “Healthy Family Free of Tobacco” funded by the CPDD. The presenters were: Dr. Marina Aghajanyan (Verelk), Dr. Alexander Bazarchyan, MOH Tobacco Control Program Coordinator, Mr. Karlen Babayan (Dpt. of Physical Education, Yerevan State University), Dr. Narine Movsisyan (Coalition for Tobacco Free Armenia), Dr. Anna Margaryan (Dpt. of Family Medicine, Yerevan State Medical University, Dr. Knarine Ghazanchyan (People for Healthy Lifestyle) , Ms. Marina Tashchyan (OFFS Armenia, Football Federation of Armenia), Dr. Irina Khachatryan (Republican Oncological Center).

The participants of the round-table discussed the Resolution to be adopted [ARM].


October 2, 2006. Press Conference on Amendmends on Law on Advertising

The Armenian Public Health Alliance and the Coalition for Tobacco Free Armenia organized a press conference on the occasion of the enactment of the RA Law “On Making Amendments in the RA Law “On Advertising”. According to this Law the outside advertisement of tobacco products is banned in Armenia starting from October 1, 2006.

September 24, 2006. Talk-show on Tobacco Advertisement

The “Human Health” Fund and the Scientific Association of Medical Students of Armenia (SAMSA) in cooperation with H2 TV Channel organized and aired talk show covering tobacco advertisement issues. The guests of the program were the popular stars Emmi and Arthur Ispiryan and popular DJ Egor Glumov. The invited experts were Dr. Alexander Bazarchyan, National Tobacco Control Program Coordinator and Suren Krmoyan, Adviser to The Minister of Health on legislative issues. The talk-show was organized within the framework of the anti-smoking project, funded by the state budget and administrated by the Center for Public Dialog and Development.

July 12- 15, 2006. 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health

The 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) was held in Washington DC, USA under the slogan “Building Capacity for a Smoke-free World” and attracted over 4500 tobacco control advocates and professionals from all corners of the world. Armenia was presented at the 13th WCTOH by Paruyr Amirjanyan (ICHD), Nellie Darbinyan (Health Education and Promotion Association), Zaruhi Darbinyan, Hovhannes Margaryants (Armenian Public Health Union), Marietta Khurshudyan, Narine Movsisyan, (American University of Armenia) and Heghine Zakaryan (Women for Green Way for Generations).

June 16, 2006. Anti-Smoking Media Campaign in Marzes of Armenia

The Center for Health Services Research and Development at the American University of Armenia in cooperation with the “Internews”, media support NGO, organized trainings for regional journalists and an open competition for marz TV companies to implement small anti-smoking campaigns. The winners of the competition, “Lori” TV (Vanadzor), “Khustup” TV (Kapan), “Alt” TV ( Armavir) and “Fortuna” TV (Stepanavan) presented their anti-smoking campaigns on June 16 at the Golden Tulip Hotel. The program was supported by international cancer charities, the American Cancer Society (ACS), Cancer Research UK, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) through International Research and Exchange Board (IREX).

May 31, 2006. World No Tobacco Day 2006

The United Nations (UN) and World Health Organizaton (WHO) representatives organized a press conference on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day.
The RA Ministry of Health and “Human Health” Fund organized the annual “Quit and Win” national contest. Among 588 participants, 125 quitted smoking from May 2 to May 29.

May 15, 2006. Center for Public Dialog and Development Announces the Winners of the Tobacco Control Grant Competition
The Center for Public Dialog and Development (CPDD) apportioned small grants from the Armenian state budget for ten antismoking projects. The CTFA member organizations (Armenian Medical Association, Children’s Health Care Association, Scientific Association of Medical Students of Armenia (SAMSA), “Verelk” United Women” NGO were among the winners.

The Armenian Public Health Alliance organized a round-table on “Tobacco Control Law Adopted: What is Next?”

Mr. Avetisyan Hayk, Head of Monitoring Department of the National Committee on TV and Radio, Ms. Nouneh Sargsyan, Executive Director, Internews, Dr. Eleonora Matevosyan, MOH representative, and other participants of the round-table discussion expressed their points of views on the issues.

April 6, 2006. Panel Discussion at AUA

The American University of Armenia hosted a panel discussion organized by the Armenian Public Health Alliance with support from the Open Society Institute. The title of the panel discussion was “Feminization of Tobacco Epidemics in Armenia: Can We Avoid It?”

March 31, 2006. Elections of the CTFA Coordinator

The CTFA Board met at AUA for the elections of Coordinator of the Coalition for Tobacco Free Armenia. The Election Committee was presented by Dr. Knarine Ghazanchyan (People for Healthy Lifestyle NGO), Dr. David Petrosyan (Human Health Fund), Ms. Zaruhi Darbinyan (Armenian Public Health Union).
The overwhelming majority of Coalition member organizations voted for the current coordinator Dr. Narine Movsisyan, who was re-elected for the next term.
Board members discussed opportunities for participation at the Center for Public Dialog and Development (CPDD) grant competition.
